The Speaker visits Israel and Palestine

The Speaker Urban Ahlin and a delegation of members of the Riksdag made official visits to Israel and Palestine on 12–15 November. The delegation’s programme focused on education, innovations, research and the situation in the region.

The official visit to Israel was the result of an invitation by the Speaker of the Knesset Edelstein, who then also received the Speaker Ahlin and his delegation for a meeting and discussions that included the situation in the region and how the two parliaments can increase their cooperation both in various policy areas and at the administrative level. During their day at the Knesset, the Speaker met parliamentarians from different parties in the Knesset, the leader of the opposition Isaac Herzog and the Chair of the Parliamentary Israeli-Swedish Friendship Association Eyal Ben Reuven.

The programme in Israel also included a number of study visits and discussions on security policy, innovations and education at the Bialik-Rogozin School, the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), the Israel Innovation Authority and Tel Aviv University. The Speaker honoured the victims of the Holocaust at a wreath-laying ceremony at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center.

During their official visit to Palestine, the Speaker and delegation met the Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Malki for meetings on the current situation in Palestine and the Middle East. The Speaker and members of the Riksdag also met representatives of the Palestinian Legislative Assembly, hosted by Nabil Shaat, MP.

The programme also included meetings with representatives of UN bodies working with humanitarian operations and organisations working with women’s rights and human rights in Palestine. At a field visit to Rawabi, the delegation looked at an urban development project with a strong focus on innovation, and modern and green lifestyles.
